An important part of married life, sex is among the three pillars of good health. Food and sleep being the other two. Disciplined indulgence can be a source of intense pleasure, and happiness while being inconsistent can be a source of physical as well as mental and emotional ill-health.
Avoiding extremes
- Too much sexual contact depletes the body of oja (the refined nourishment) and leaves it vulnerable to disease. It reduces strength and brings down immunity.
- Too frequent ejaculation also deteriorates the semen quality and affects the quality of offspring.
- Forcibly holding the urge to ejaculate is also harmful. It can lead to impotence and pain during intercourse.
Healthy frequency and ideal times
- The best time to indulge in sex is between 10 to 11 pm
- Day-time intercourse is not advised
- Frequency varies with the season
- During the winter months from November to February, having sex often is allowed.
- During March-April and then September-October, once in 3 days is fine.
- During the summer and monsoon months of May to August, keeping it down to once in two weeks is health protective.
- Frequency also varies with body constitutions.
As per ayurvedic principles, sex should be avoided:
- After heavy meals or when hungry or thirsty
- When angry or fatigued
- In uncomfortable positions
- When having the urge to pass urine or motions
- During menstruation of the female partner
Post-coital care
- Private parts should be thoroughly cleaned
- Nourishment like almond milk or milk and ghee should be had to replenish lost oja
- Sleep is a must
