What is PMS?
PMS stands for Pre-Menstrual Syndrome. It is a group of symptoms that occur before every period. Generally, they begin ten days to a week before impending menstruation.
What are the common symptoms of PMS?
It is a combination of physical and emotional complaints as follows:
- Physical complaints:
- Sore, tender breasts
- Abdominal bloating
- Constipation
- Change of appetite, food cravings or unusually low appetite
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Water retention
- Weight gain
- Pimples
- Emotional complaints:
- Mood swings
- Crying
- Anger
- Irritability
Is it normal?
PMS has become so common that it is now considered “normal”. But it is not! It indicates an imbalance in the doshas related to the menstrual cycle. Depending on the predominant complaints, the imbalanced dosha needs to be identified and treated.
Another crucial factor is a digestive weakness that leads to imbalanced doshas. External factors like contraceptive pills and food products leading to hormonal imbalance, too, play a role.
Why should it be corrected?
Apart from the obvious reason of the quality of life (why spend a week every month being an unreasonable person that you naturally are not), it is a big indication the body is in a state of imbalance. When ignored for long, it leads to further disease and problems like infertility, depression, blood issues, joint pains, etc.
