What should and should not be done during a period?
Ayurved has set a certain code of behaviour to be followed during menstruation. The aim of this is good health – both reproductive and overall. During the time that the body is shedding menstrual blood, a balanced diet and lifestyle are essential so that the process is done optimally. The lack of following these guidelines is a key reason for rising infertility and other health problems in women.
Indian society has traditionally attached a whole lot of stigma to this regimen. The real purpose of good health had been forgotten, and silly notions have been passed on. Let us look at it with logic alone, and we can see how important it is.
- Diet – It should be light and easy to digest. Milk and milk-based diets are beneficial. Also, food that includes barley should be included. Food should be dry and lesser in quantity than normal appetite – too spicy, sour, fermented, and oily things should be avoided. This is important so that the body is not pressurized to get into the digestive mode and transfer major blood supply to the GIT (gastrointestinal tract).
- Activities – For the first 3 days, activities should be kept to a minimum. Simply sitting or lying down is recommended. Jerky, hectic activity causes the blood to gush to the muscles in use. Instead, during a period, it should be directed to the uterine muscles. It may cause a scanty or too heavy period, both of which are invitations for future trouble.
Sexual activity during a period is a strict No. Also, it is a time for mental rest that is equally important. A balance of emotions and thoughts can only be achieved by regular breaks for introspection. Nature provides it to every lady, if only we would use it.
- Hygiene– Maintaining genital cleanliness is essential. Changing soaked pads frequently is advised. A gentle sponging or cleaning just the hands, feet, and face is enough for the first three days. A head bath is advised from the 4th day onward.
