At Ayurvedic Answers, we understand that women are nurturers, professionals, and homemakers. Only a mentally and physically healthy woman can ensure that her family adopts a healthy lifestyle, which will eventually percolate into society at large. However, women’s health is rarely taken seriously.

We want to change that. As a leading lady ayurvedic doctor/ female gynaecologist, Dr. Bhatt offers comprehensive and holistic treatments for all kinds of complaints, concerns, and complications that a woman could have. Through her counselling and treatment, she ensures that women (especially young girls) are empowered to make conscious choices for their own wellbeing.

What is menarche?

Menarche is the beginning of menstruation or periods. It happens when the female reproductive system matures and starts its overall functioning.

What is the normal age for menarche?

Naturally, menarche occurs at the ages of 12 to 16 years.

What is Early Menarche?

Menstruation starting in girls as younger than 12 can be considered early menarche. It has been observed that in some cases, menarche occurs as early as 6 to 10 years of age. Early menarche is highly undesirable.

When is menarche called Delayed?

Menstruation not setting in even after the age of 16 to 17 years is known as delayed menarche.

What are the factors essential for normal menarche?

  • Food– During the growing phase, the body should be provided balanced, nutritious meals. This includes wholesome and homemade meals, including vegetables, chapatis, dals, rice, sprouts, and soups. Proper use of fruits and dry fruits, as well as milk, oil, and ghee are extremely important.
  • Exercise– Lots of outdoor playing is necessary during these years. Let those bones and muscles stretch and grow.
  • Sleep– It is the most crucial factor to keep the hormones working normally. Adequate sleep at night is a must.
  • Exposure– Be it TV, mobile, laptops, adult discussion, or friends, try to see that the young mind is not overloaded with information before time. For this to happen, the mother or grandmother needs to be around, aware, and involved. Without imposing a curfew, things should be allowed to happen on time.
  • Overall health– For the reproductive organs to function normally, overall good health is mandatory.
  • Emotional wellbeing– The girl child should be in good emotional health, a loving relationship with parents is a prerequisite for hormones to function normally.

What are the causes of early or delayed menarche?

  • Diet– Junk food, cold drinks, excessively fat-laden ice creams, and cakes, chips and all sorts of spicy, salty, sour packed snacks can contribute to it.
  • Physical activity- The lack of adequate physical activity or too much of it may also be a cause. Rather than burdening adolescent girls with too many extracurricular activities, parents should allow them free playtime.
  • Sleep– Missing out on a good night’s sleep and sleeping excessively during the day can be a factor.
  • Exposure– Unlimited use of TV, smartphones, and social media, and unsupervised indulgence in adult discussions with friends or peers overload the young brain with information leading to physical maturity before time.
  • Overall health– Anaemia, worms, jaundice, typhoid, certain fevers, recurrent diarrhoea, etc. affect menarche.
  • Emotional imbalances– Tense relationship with parents, unhealthy home, or school environment can be a critical factor.

What can be done to facilitate normal menarche in our daughters?

Taking care of all the above-mentioned factors is necessary. Mothers of young girls should be attentive to their daughters, and themselves learn the facts from a doctor. Counselling for mothers is an effective way to ensure that the best information is passed on to their daughters.
