What constitutes a normal menstrual period?
Ayurved states that there are different body constitutions or prakruti. Accordingly, there are variations in the menstrual cycles depending on the individual body constitution. A period that has the following characteristics is considered normal.
- Regularity: A cycle that repeats every 26/28/30/32/34 days, with the most common being 28 days.
- Duration: There should be bleeding for a minimum of 3 days and a maximum of 7 days.
- Quantity: This also varies from person to person. The ideal quantity is measured according to the individual female’s cupped hands placed together side by side for Anjali.
- Quality: The blood should be reddish with a slightly blackish tinge. It has a specific non-offensive odour. The flow should be painless (mild discomfort is normal), without a burning sensation and non-slimy or sticky. It should flow out at a mild and constant pace.
