Daily Routine

We all know that humans are a part of nature. Hence, whether we are aware of it or not, there are universal laws that are unchanging and influence everything around us.

It is up to us to align oneself with these laws and rhythms (and gain the maximum benefit) or to lose our connection (and strive alone). Being the most intelligent of species on the planet certainly means that we should be able to use these to our advantage.

The first step is to know these rhythms of nature. Everyday events that occur with unflinching certainty should be the cornerstones we base our daily routine upon. The most prominent factor is the movement of the earth appearing before us as the movement of the sun and the moon.

Regularity and discipline

Our body is very much like a machine and works in a fixed manner in normal circumstances. Giving it a regular environment optimises its functioning. This regularity is desired in terms of sleep and food timings, balance in work and recreation and also time for silence and contemplation.
Without this, a major and basic part of being human will always be beyond our reach.

Discipline is not rules imposed by a strict authority; rather, it is what comes naturally if we are aware and concerned about the real purpose of any activity we may undertake.

A general guide to Ayurvedic daily routine:

  1. Wake up time – Ideally, it should be an hour or two before sunrise. It is when Vat dosh is most active and waking up at this time will facilitate the optimum evacuation of wastes.
  2. Oral hygiene – Brushing of teeth and scraping the tongue. Use of bitter, pungent, and astringent tastes in the paste rids the mouth of all waste and promotes long-lasting dental health. The tongue should be scraped clean every morning only, not at night. Also, it is essential to observe the tongue after cleaning and to take steps to rectify easily identifiable indigestion. 3. Bowel movements – A glass of warm water may help here. It is best to not use any stimulant. Regular bowel movements occur naturally by being regular and disciplined when it comes to food habits.
  4. Abhyang and nasya – Application of suitable oils to the entire body is most beneficial. Oil should be administered at least to the scalp, feet, ears, and nose, if not the entire body.
  5. Meditation, Pranayam, Yoga, and Exercises – These are essential for all but vary greatly with each person to be able to give general information.
  6. Bath – Coldwater above the waist and warm water below the waist is the rule.
  7. Food – What, when, how, and how much is an entire science in itself! Related reading – Food.
  8. Work – Having an engaging and balanced work-life allows you to live healthy and happy.
  9. Unwinding – Free, unplanned moments to rejuvenate the mind and soul are a must, to gain clarity for all other endeavours. Time spent with family or friends is relaxing and energizing.
  10. Dinner Timing – Dinner should not be much later than the time of sunset.
  11. Bedtime – Cow milk just before bed is very nourishing. Apply oil again to the scalp and feet.

Finishing touches

The above are general guidelines. Modifications as per an individual’s constitution and the present body state are most important.

Waving with the wind

Changes to this routine as per seasons are also mandatory.
